My casual attire consists mostly of a Japanese street fashion known as lolita fashion. The name is a bit unfortunate as it is a rather modest style, with many elements derived from Roccoco era. Lolita fashion is not a cosplay. People who wear alternative fashions are wearing clothes that make us feel like our best selves, not someone else. Sadly, there is a common misconception that people who wear lolita fashion are participating in a fetish. The significant majority of us are not. We actually take offense to being objectified and fetishized.
We are not dolls or cartoon characters, but rather living breathing people with friends, families and names. That said, if your young child says we look like a princess or a doll, odds are we will take that as a compliment.
